Dogs with Dog Walker

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this project is to raise awareness on how the wellbeing of dogs could affect the health of the public and increase the risks of being afflicted with deadly diseases.

WHY?

In Hong Kong, people are willing to pay large sums of money to buy purebred pets, many not realising the ugly realities of the puppy mills they come from and how badly pet stores treat them. Adoption is not a common choice either -  due to the general stigma surrounding mongrels as being “dirty”or “belonging to construction sites”, many of these mongrels are left to survive on the streets.

Additionally, many citizens underestimate the responsibilities they have to take when owning a dog, thus many of these dogs are mistreated or even abandoned.

Diseases such as rabies and parasites spread easily amongst these abandoned dogs as people do not provide them with injections or other protective measures, leaving humans to be deceptible towards these diseases as well.

To consider the various cultural aspects regarding this issue, we further compared Hong Kong with other countries. For example, the geographical difference between Ireland and Hong Kong in terms of area of space accessible for dogs result in the problem being more common and severe here in Hong Kong. It is evident from recorded footage taken by one of our group members that there are many places available for dogs, even in individual homes such as the backyard areas.

There are other factors unique to Hong Kong which make the issue more significant, such as pollution, claustrophobic spacing, fast paced lives and long working hours.
